FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On behalf of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, I extend my congratulations to William Kirkland III on his confirmation by the U.S. Senate as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs plays a central role in upholding the federal trust responsibility, supporting tribal self-determination, managing resources, and delivering essential services and infrastructure across Indian Country.

As a Navajo leader, Mr. Kirkland carries with him a first-hand understanding of the complexities and challenges faced by sovereign tribal nations. His pledge to steward whatever resources Congress allocates, and to maximize their impact, is welcome and necessary – especially now, when many tribal programs and resources are increasingly stretched.

We are ready to engage and support Assistant Secretary Kirkland and President Trump in addressing our Nation’s priorities to advance sovereignty, well-being and prosperity. Once again, congratulations to Assistant Secretary Kirkland.
