Legal System

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma is a sovereign nation that is federally recognized by the U.S. government. It has its own tribal court system that meets every third Friday of each month, handling cases including civil suits, small claims, divorces and criminal proceedings.

As a sovereign nation, the UKB also operates its own Indian Child Welfare Department, addressing issues including guardianship and paternity.

Additionally, our Lighthorse Police are cross deputized to handle cases within our jurisdicitonal area.
