The John Hair Cultural Center and Keetoowah Museum will begin another section of the 2024 “Getting Back to Basics” series when it begins its Fall classes on Quilting for Beginners. This section will be offered monthly on three Saturdays includingSeptember 14, October 12, and November 9, from 10 am to 2 pm. The cost is $75.00. for all three sessions.
Tribal elder and culture bearer Betty Holcomb will teach the quilting classes. The classes will show how to cut out and hand sew quilting blocks, how to put them together and steps involved in making them into a quilt, as well as hand quilting the piece. At last year’s quilting series, participants made a pillow top.
Assistant Keetoowah Museum director Barbara Girty Foster said, “I like hosting this quilting class because it brings people together and reminds us of the “good ole days” when our grandmas, aunts and neighbors would gather around a quilt frame hand stitching, telling stories and laughing, then before you knew it a quilt was finished and ready to share with someone in need.”To sign up for the quilting classes, please contact Barbara Girty Foster at 918-871-2794.
